Alternatives to Discarding Garments

Alternatives to Discarding Garments

April 27, 2023 Book Excerpts

Thinking about cleaning out your closet but looking for the best ways to lighten your clothing load? There are many ways to go about it. It depends on your needs and time availability. There are things that can be done.

ONLINE SELLING

The online resell market is a booming business, with many options to list your clothing in order to recoup your investment. This includes major social media platforms and online businesses dedicated to reselling clothing and accessories. The thing to remember is that items should be presented in the best condition possible.

  • Make sure items are cleaned.

  • Take photographs (if posting online) that show the item to its best advantage.

GARAGE OR ESTATE SALES

If selling clothing items is your goal, holding garage or estate sales are good options. People love to find bargains at these types of events. Things like high-value home accessories, sports gear and vintage products are typically the most sought-after items. Clothing (unless it is a rare piece) is more common, so may not be as desirable. Some of the same rules apply as with selling online.

  • Batch items together, if possible, to get the best opportunity to clear items more quickly out of your closet.

  • It is unlikely that you will wash and press items, but try to make them presentable (hung on a rack, folded, labeled, sorted in bags, etc.) to give the best presentation possible.

CONSIDER GIFTING AS A WAY TO PART WITH CLOTHING ITEMS

Perhaps there is someone in your circle of family and friends who would love that clothing item. They can be the first people to approach. The same rule applies to prepping that item, as with reselling it online. Be sure it is cleaned and perhaps even boxed as a gift. This will truly be regarded as something special rather than an unwanted cast off.

THINK OUTSIDE THE TRADITIONAL BOX TO DONATE ITEMS

As we have stated, donated garments, in poor condition, can end up being discarded to landfills or shipped to developing nations. These are some alternatives that are worth considering, since these clothing items go to fulfill important needs.

  • Theatrical companies (for stage production costumes).

  • Charities that provide clothing to people rebuilding their lives (with professional attire, etc.).

  • Foster care programs (this is great for kids clothing).
